Proper cannabis treatment

Proper cannabis treatment

Some growers don't know what curing is and confuse it with fermentation. In fact, curing is the last stage of marijuana drying, during which moisture, sugar and other unnecessary substances are removed from the buds. This improves the flavor of the hemp and prevents it from rotting.

There are several ways to cure. We will talk about them and explain which method to choose in a given situation.

Varieties of marijuana curing

Growers usually use one of three curing methods:

  1. Classic

First you need to prepare airtight containers for dried cones. Opaque containers made of plastic or porcelain are best. In extreme cases, you can paint a glass jar dark. It is important to cure in a dark place where the temperature does not rise above 21˚C. For example, in the refrigerator or cellar. In the first week of curing, you need to open the container twice a day for 20-30 minutes so that the condensate evaporates in it. It will also prevent the formation of mold. From the second week, it is enough to open the container once a day.

The curing is complete when the chlorophyll in the buds has broken down and they turn brown. Depending on the variety, this process takes from three weeks to two months.

This is the easiest method and does not require sophisticated equipment, but is slow.

  1. Accelerated

To quickly prepare marijuana for use, you need to keep it in a dark place where the supply of oxygen is limited. For example, in the closet. The temperature there should not exceed 21˚C. You need to spread the cones on paper for at least a week and turn them over once a day. This way they dry evenly. Curing will end when the buds become crispy.

Hemp will be ready to use in just a week. Ready-made marijuana should not be stored for more than two months.

  1. Water

Cure with water is performed immediately after the harvest. Cannabis does not need to be dried. Cones are placed in a jar and filled with distilled water to the neck. The container must be kept in a dark place with a temperature not exceeding 21˚C. It is important to change the water in the jar every day to clear the mineral salts from the buds. Water is checked with a TDS meter. Curing will end when the salt content is almost zero. This will take up to fourteen days.

Water curing fully reveals the taste and aroma of the product. A TDS or EC meter is required to test the water. After curing, you need to dry the buds.

Choose the method of drying and curing cannabis depending on the availability of free time and special equipment. If there is a TDS meter in the house, it is better to cure with water. It will allow you to get marijuana with the brightest taste.

The standard method is suitable for beginner growers. They can use the hardiest marijuana strains to grow plants with minimal effort, and then carry out a simplified cure.

The fast drying method is recommended for people who want to smoke their fresh cannabis crop faster. Marijuana will be ready in just a week.

Subtleties of proper curing for cannabis

If the cannabis is dried in a container, it is recommended to check every day what it smells like. The aroma of marijuana is a sign of proper curing. But when the jar smells of ammonia, the cannabis got moldy. It is important to put the buds out to dry or keep the jar open longer every day.

If the marijuana buds are dry, you can put a lettuce leaf in the container. This will hydrate the hemp and extend its shelf life.
