Purple Paro Valley (PPV) is a unique strain developed from a landrace Sativa originating in the Paro Valley of West Bhutan, at an altitude of 2,500 meters. This feminized hybrid is just two generations removed from its wild Himalayan ancestors, which have adapted to the region's challenging climate, characterized by dry spells, monsoon rains, and cold winters. PPV is highly recommended for cultivation in northern climates up to 56°N, or in areas with high humidity. As global warming makes outdoor cultivation more unpredictable, this resilient strain offers a reliable solution.

PPV's extreme durability allows it to tolerate low temperatures better than most modern cannabis strains. Although its flexible branches may appear fragile, the Paro landrace is known for withstanding strong winds and heavy rain, a trait largely inherited by PPV. However, it is advisable to support the plants if a storm is expected. The strain boasts exceptional mold resistance and is nutrient-efficient. Hybridizing the landrace was necessary to improve yield, and cultivating large, multi-branch plants can further enhance productivity. PPV is particularly suitable as a "back-up strain" in unfavorable climates, making it a reliable option when other varieties may fail. It is also an excellent choice for guerrilla cultivation due to its low maintenance requirements.

Although the original landrace genetics are homogeneous, the current feminized strain displays some diversity, which can be beneficial for ensuring a successful harvest. There are mainly two phenotypes: green and purple. The purple phenotype, which accounts for approximately 75% of plants, is visually striking during flowering. The green phenotype is shorter, finishes flowering earlier, and produces more compact buds. Purple plants tend to have longer internodes, so late planting and pruning are recommended, especially in containers or greenhouses. In Mediterranean or hot climates, plants can grow between 1.5 to 2 meters if planted in June (northern hemisphere) and left unpruned. For more manageable sizes, limit the vegetative growth to one month and consider pruning the main growing tip once. PPV also responds well to low-stress training (LST), and trimming the lower shoots can strengthen the upper branches.

During flowering, most PPV plants develop a spicy and green lime aroma, characteristic of the Paro landrace. One particularly notable phenotype, dubbed "candy girl," emits a sugary candy scent, while the green phenotype leans towards a lavender aroma, likely due to the presence of the terpene linalool, which also enhances sedative and pain-relief effects. Some purple plants can have a black tea aroma, but the smoke retains a fresh, minty aftertaste. PPV hash oil has a sweet, balsamic aroma reminiscent of Himalayan cedar wood and has tested at 27.5% THC. The high is predominantly relaxing, making it ideal for winding down, as a sleep aid, and for alleviating hyperactivity and nervousness.
